It's never going to end
We started the upgrade two weeks ago. It was supposed to be done in a week. Jeremy the computer guy finished his bit yesterday and isn't scheduled to be coming back. But it's still not done. We're still shaking out the bugs, I have to wipe the old equipment for the staff folks that are taking it home, document it and send it all in to Jane. And deal with teaching people who don't have the mental capacity to operate computers how to use the new terminal server system. It's not as bad for the folks with thin clients, they only have one environment to work in. The ones who have desktop and terminal server environments because they are using third party software and whatnot are walking around with smoke coming out of their ears.
And when this whole thing started we told everyone, if you have something that you need to word with/on that requires software NOT on the terminal server you need to keep that kind of thing on your desktop. Yesterday one of the chicks from Community Services comes down whining about she can't work on her pictures. I go look and YEAH she can't work on her pictures, Jeremy moved them to the terminal server and she had a completely different desktop before the transition that has since been added to the pile of towers to be wiped. And not only did it take me forever to explain to her what the problem is, she looked at me like it was MY fault. I mean aside from using monosyllabic words and drawing pictures I don't know how much more clear I could have been about this stuff.
I just get so tired as the end of these weeks. Mostly because I keep hoping this will be the week it's going to be over and it never is. I've got other work that I can't get done cause I have to deal with all this junk. It's like, I have to sit down in between running between computers to do one or two of my reports/correspondence/what the heck ever else. I go get lunch, sit down to eat and read a little bit and end up answering phones and dealing with interpreting services crises.
Yesterday, I got into the office, hadn't even got my stuff put down, the phone was ringing. I was alone with Lois in the office. Now Lois is deaf. I have a very limited amount of sign I can use effectively, so when we're alone together in the office there is a lot of note writing going on. While I was on the phone Lois came looking for me. Got off the phone and tried to sneak down the hall to at least get my oatmeal going before she grabbed me, but no such luck. She drags me down to the VRI room (Video Relay Interpreting). I have no idea why, she just signs "help". So I sign "what?" with the requisite confused as heck look on my face. She points to the PolyComm and there are people on there looking at us, Lois activates the machine and looks at me expectantly. She wanted me to interpret for her!!!!! I panic and give her the universal deer in the headlights look, so she writes me a note. "Are you from the Dover Foxcroft Court?" So I stand in front of the PolyComm and read the note. They say yes. I turn to Lois and sign yes. They ask "So are we all set for Monday?" Since I'm still panicking at this point the only word in that sentence I can remember the sign for is Monday. So I sign Monday with a questioning expression. Lois nods and signs 3. So I say to the folks "Yes for three o'clock". Then we all exchange thank yous and I leave. Let me just say that that S**KED. I was totally unprepared, hadn't even settled in for the morning and hadn't had my oatmeal! LOL
The week of the ninth, I'm going out to a whole bunch of folks houses to set up the VPN on their home computers so they can access the terminal server at home.
I'm just tired.
I went to parent/teacher conferences last week. Aside from the usual Autism issues, Ian's teacher says he's making good progress. Which is a great relief. He does seem to be doing so much better with his reading. Aidan's teacher spoke very glowingly about her. Says she's a joy. She's still having issues sitting still. I don't know if that's just natural exuberance or ADHD, but so far it's not really affecting her learning. She's at or above where she's supposed to be in everything. She only got one low mark and that was in recognizing and working with complex shapes. Her teacher says that's because it's a new skill she taught during group time when Aidan wasn't paying attention. We've both talked to her about it so hopefully she can get herself settled down. All in all everyone is coming along nicely.
We got our taxes back. Got a nice chunk of change. Since John's Aspire bit the dust I told him he should get himself a new-ish car. He spent a good two or three weeks looking around and I kept wondering what was taking him so long. Last Friday he called me and told me he found a car and we'd be going up to New Hampshire to pick it up. I start asking him about it and said if it had a good sound system I'd be willing to trade him for my station wagon. He laughs and says "Do you think I'd spend this much time looking for a car for me?" LOL Goof. He picked me out a nice 2000 Subaru Forester and new booster seats for the kids. 121,477 miles on it, but it's very nice and runs great. And it does have a good sound system. So much better getting down these dirt roads during Mud Season in an All Wheel Drive car. He also got an auto car starter for it, but hasn't installed it yet. Hee hee hee... And there was apparently some left over cause he also got me a 4gb IPod Nano and a 22" wide screen, flat screen monitor. It's wicked cool, but it takes a little bit of getting used to. LOL Now the irony is that because of all this frivolous spending the universe has smacked us in the back of the head and my glasses broke. I've superglued them back together and John gets paid next Friday so I can go get some new ones, but still. That really was a lot of stuff we didn't need.
Last week the washing machine broke, but it's something John can fix. He has the new part, he just hasn't had time to actually do it yet. He was hoping to do it today but he got called out to Wolfboro. It's about a five hour round trip. He says he's going to do it when he gets back, but we'll see, I suppose. Poor guy. The good news about him having the station wagon is that now he doesn't have to be on call EVERY week. He and New Guy will be trading weeks, hopefully starting next week. And perhaps I can go to one or two of the girls nights out that the girls at work always have but I can never go to because I have no one to watch the kids. And perhaps we can occasionally go do a family thing together. MAYBE even go to church once in a while. I'd really like that, actually.
Well, that's it for now. Peace out.
