Introduction to Living in the Great Northeast
(CUL 101)
Today's topic:
Why We Really Do Like All That Snow
Ok, there are two very important reasons why those of us who live up here really actually like 2 or 3 good feet of snow on the ground during the winter.
Reason #1: Ski Resorts. They make TONS of money when there is a good base of snow because folks flock up here in droves to get out and enjoy nature shooshing downhill at 30 miles an hour. AND when there is a good base of snow, it costs much less to make snow and maintain the hills.
Reason #2: As some of you may know,
SNOW INSULATES!!!!! If you have a good 2 to 3 foot base of snow on the ground, even when it gets to be this cold, the ground won't freeze because the snow insulates it.
We do not have a good base of snow on the ground. We have maybe a couple of inches, if that. Less in most places. Which means that with this extended
ARCTIC COLD SNAP everything is freezing right up. First it was the incoming water pipes. Those froze up twice in the last month. We now have that situation under control. HOWEVER, we don't have public sewer out here. Everyone is on a leech field. And if the ground is so frozen that it can't absorb anything, your leech field won't leech!!! Which means that your septic chambers just get fuller and fuller. So you have to limit the amount of input (read stuff going out of the house). Every time you flush, brush your teeth, wash your clothes...etc. the water goes out to the septic. And no one can come out and pump it out because
THE GROUND'S FROZEN!!! The cost to get the equipment to dig up the leech field and pump it out would be prohibitive to say the least.
So that is why we always just scoff when someone says, "Well at least you don't have snow!"
GAD!
