I really gotta tell ya, folks, if you're looking for a clean, unobtrusive, entertaining pet, Hermit Crabs are really the way to go. I think I am having as much fun with these things as Ian is. They are smart little suckers which I find terribly facinating because I didn't think they even had brains! I thought all they had was a central nerve bundle or something like that but it's amazing what they can do. And they each have their own little personalities as well. I am going to stick a couple of pictures in here so you can see. This is their home. We call it the Crabitat.
Let's see if I can introduce you to the crew. There is Big Spot. He was our first crab and a rescue. Before we got him I had never even thought of them as pets but Ian liked the idea so we brought him home. The Ian decided he needed a friend so we got Big Shelly, who is really about half Big Spot's size. Then there is Little Spot and Little Shelly. They are both about half the size of Big Shelly. Big Spot is the "ruler of the roost". Big Shelly is the shy one of the bunch. Little Spot is "Danger Crab" he is the most outgoing and daring. And Little Shelly is kind of quiet but not shy. And they really are a little family. Little Spot was climbing inside one of the big shells and got stuck and the others were all trying to help him out. And in one of the earlier posts I mentioned the attempted jailbreak. Very cute in a crustacean kind of way. :oD
Apparently shells are not just for protection. Shells are also status symbols in the crab community. This crew all get along fabulously well except when it comes to sharing shells. Even if they already have one that they like that fits, if they see a different one and someone else is trying to take it they will get into a spat about it. And Big Spot, being the king, has to try on every new shell that comes in even if it's too small. LOLOL It's a riot. He'll try it on, wear it around a little and then get back in the one he likes the best. Little Spot has been known to run around butt nekid, that is without a shell for stretches of time. I thought this was cool cause I hadn't seen one out of their shell before but John called me down one night to look at him and sure enough he was climbing through the fake foliage naked as a jaybird. Here is "Danger Crab" in action.
That is John's arm he is walking on.
So that's the scoop on our little crab crew. They're way cool. :oD
