Well, THAT was an interesting process... It was John and I, Martie, Hope and Erica (from Ian's school), and Janet (the CDS worker). The person who did the OT evaluation didn't show up.
We went through the reports that were available (OT and Psych) and chatted about the recommendations and how we could implement them. And Janet is still working on getting the Communication evaluation done. I'm still kind of processing the whole thing myself so I can't really say that I feel 100% OK about it all yet. I guess the parts I do feel ok about are that everyone is working to have his therapies happen in his regular classroom and that Martie is going to stick with us and she and I are going to keep brainstorming therapy options. Erica and Hope talk like they are all behind this and perhaps they are. Hope was asking questions and seemed like she was interested in getting some helpful strategies to teach Ian. And Erica was putting in her comments about Ians behavior and how he has been improving.
I don't want to say I'm hopeful because it's going to be a long road and we haven't really started yet. The reports from this meeting have to be drawn up, goals and objectives have to be clarified and that can't happen until the Communication eval is done, and we haven't actually gotten an OT/DT therapist on board yet.
I'm still very scared for Ian. I'm wary of people now since I read the article about the mother being arrested and after listening to talk about HR1350. But I'm reading everything I can get my hands on and I'm learning what questions to ask. And I'm also learning what Ian will need. I am reading an excellent book right now by
Tony Attwood who is the globally accepted guru of Asperger's Syndrome. One of these days I am going to have to start an Asperger's page to get all of my resources in one place. I'm getting quite a few.
And I am still talking to my kid. Our relationship hasn't changed at all, thank goodness. He is still just as wonderful and I still don't think there is anything wrong with him. Since I have been reading the articles and books I am noticing things that are part of Ian's make up that I thought were "just Ian". They aren't bad, they are just like any other person's ideocynchrasies that have to be acknowledged and accepted. But some of them, in relation to his fine motor skills, auditory processing and peer interaction, could use some work in order for him to function at the same level as others in his age group. And it doesn't sound like anyone has any intention of telling him that there is something wrong with him. So far they all seem to hold the same opinion. He just needs a little coaching in certain areas but otherwise he is a very sweet, highly intelligent kid. That is a great relief. I so don't want him to change. He is just amazing the way he is.
