And on the "ain't nature grand..." homefront. Shelly the Small hermit crab is not, in fact dead!!! Through the miracles of "crab technology" she simply molted. And aparently when they molt, hermit crabs pull way back into their shells for a while until their new exoskeletons harden. John was quite surprised when, as they were watching the two new ones, Shelly 1 kicked some left-over pieces of exoskeleton out of her shell. We had left it in the tank in case one of the smaller crabs wanted to use it and it's a good thing we did!!! She came out and seemed a bit shocked to see the newcomers but went right over to greet Spot 1. And one of the little guys molted too so, needless to say, Ian had a wonderful lesson in hermit crab biology today. LOLOL And the new guys are apparently much more friendly and outgoing as well. They love to crawl all over Ian's hand and he thinks it's the funniest thing. We have to help him though because he's not quick enough to catch them if they crawl over the edge. Phew!! 4 hermit crabs. Good thing we have another crabitat in the barn. Gonna need to express order those spare shells.
